In Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires, you can choose 1 leader from among 14 forces, then choose 2 subordinates, for a total of 3 officers. Then it’s up to you to choose your allies. Pick player characters for every single battle. Take part in history in the Historical Scenarios. Or play any officer right from the beginning in the Fictional scenarios.
Whichever scenario you play, you are able capture officers in battle, or use diplomacy to entice an adversary to become your ally. When you capture officers that you’ve defeated in battle, you can appoint them to your service or you can expel them. It costs money to appoint an enemy officer, so you should save your funds and aim to take over enemy territory. |

The map in Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires is dotted with strongholds. In between these strongholds, you must expand the territory controlled by your own troops and your allies in order to take down the enemy. Reaching these strongholds throughout will restore your strength and will allow your army to get replenishments. The key to victory is to manage the areas under your control to your advantage, and increase the territory under your control.
There are differences in battle performance depending on whose territory you are fighting in. Allied officers and weaker characters should fight within your own territory. Characters with a lot of confidence can take on enemies on their own turf. With officer revival, enemies or allies who are defeated will return to battle. After the third defeat, the opponent will come back for a decisive duel. Lose the duel, and the opponent can no longer return to battle.

A strong character and a strong weapon are the keys to annihilating the opponent. Weapons will level up if there is a blacksmith in your territory, or when a general takes to the battlefield. Seek territories large number of smiths and seize control. Officers level up, not only by success in battle, but also by succeeding at individual goals.
A strong warrior will level up quickly by racking up defeats. The wise warrior will level up by amassing ever more territory under his control and engaging in diplomacy. If your officer levels up, both battle skills and the number of troops in your army will increase.
An officer’s skills can change the war situation as well. Each officer can have only one special skill, so it’s important to choose the right one. There are also certain rare skills that only one officer on the entire battlefield will be able to possess.
